July proclaimed Minority Mental Health Month

Herald-Journal - 7/18/2019

Jul. 18--Mental health issues affect all people of all backgrounds at some point in their life, Spartanburg County Councilman Michael Brown said Monday.

To that end, Brown declared July Minority Mental Health Month in Spartanburg County to boost awareness so that people suffering from it get the help they need.

Brown presented a resolution to Sharyn Pittman, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Spartanburg at Monday's County Council meeting.

Brown said citizens, agencies, businesses and schools are encouraged to help increase awareness and understanding of mental illness and the need for appropriate services for all with mental illnesses.

"Mental health is critical for our personal well-being as well as that of our families, communities and businesses," the resolution states. "Mental disorders and mental health problems affect people of all backgrounds and all stages of life, and no one is immune.

"NAMI recognizes the need to raise awareness on mental illness within diverse populations to reduce disparities and promote behavioral health equality."
