NYPD Shootout Leaves Suspect Dead

Canarsie Courier - 2/23/2017

A chase from the Cypress Hills projects into a backyard ended with one man dead and the NYPD in the spotlight once again. On Thursday, February 16th around 4 p.m., officers of the 75th Precinct were in the vicinity of Fountain Avenue and Blake Avenue in response to a threat of possible gang retaliation.

They spotted Kadeem Torres, 17, running down the street from the Cypress Hills Houses and followed him in the patrol car. The officers approached Torres on Logan Street, but he pulled out a gun and began firing at them. Torres attempted to run when officers returned fire.

He was chased to the back yard of 840 Belmont Avenue but was unable to getaway. Cornered, he turned and began firing at the cops again but was struck down. He died at the scene. During a press conference, Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan hinted that Torres might have been involved in a shooting earlier that week in the Pink Houses. The NYPD's Sergeant Carlos Nievesstated officers recovered a .32 caliber revolver in the yard.
