United Way will renew operations in 2018

The Daily Dispatch - 12/7/2017

Dec. 07--The United Way of Vance County Board of Directors is taking steps to get the organization functioning again.

In October, a decline in donations and tardiness of some contributors to fulfill their pledges had forced the board to suspend payments to participating agencies, close the local office and lay off the staff.

A new office of the revamped United Way will open at 715 South Garnett St. The board hopes to resume operations shortly after the beginning of the new year.

A statement released by the board of directors said that efforts are being made to resolve financial issues so that the organization will be able to resume support of its partner agencies.

"We want to assure all of our contributors and our agencies that all funds donated to the United Way of Vance County during 2017 were distributed completely and appropriately," the statement continued. "The United Way of Vance County is in good standing financially with all entities, including the United Way of North Carolina and United Way Worldwide."

The board expects to have the new United Way office fully operational early in 2018. Board president Heather Hughes said staffing plans are incomplete. Board members are currently carrying out staff functions, she said.

New fundraising efforts will allow the organization to renew grant payments to the United Way agencies in Vance and Warren counties in 2018. Currently, fundraising projects are underway at Maria Parham Health and at Kennametal, Hughes said.

Ten organizations receive funds from United Way of Vance County. They are: Area Christians Together In Service (ACTS); Addiction Recovery Center for Men; Community Partners of Hope, Inc.; FGV Smart Start; Gang Free, Inc.; Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (Vance County); Legal Aid of North Carolina; Life Line Outreach, Inc.; S.a.M. Child Advocacy Center; and Warren County Senior Center.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the United Way of Vance County should contact Heather Hughes, board president, at 252-432-2133 or Terri Hedrick, board past president, at 252-438-8702.
