DAV helps 2 vets groups

Pueblo Chieftain (CO) - 4/19/2014

April 19--The Disabled American Veterans organization aspires to follow the motto of veterans helping veterans.

In that spirit, the members of Pueblo'sDAV Chapter 2 presented checks Thursday night to two groups who assist veterans.

DAV Chapter 2 gave $2,500 to the Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team and $1,000 to Stacy Minkler to purchase challenge coins for veterans coming out of a program for treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder program.

"We, as the DAV, advocate for veterans and this is just another way we can help our veterans," said Dave Jiron of DAV Chapter 2.

The donation to the ritual team will go toward expenses for uniforms, equipment and travel to events honoring veterans.

The ritual team conducts military services at funerals of veterans from throughout the region.

The contribution to Minkler will go toward the purchase of special challenge coins for the next two years, Jiron said.

Challenge coins are a military tradition symbolizing unity, identity and pride in belonging to the unit.

Veterans with PTSD receiving mental health services receive a coin when they complete their treatment, acknowledging their journey to recover and dedication to go forward.

Anyone interested in joining the DAV can contact Jiron at 3340045.
