Library opens to wounded warriors

La Prensa (San Antonio, TX) - 7/30/2014

Local wounded warriors are getting a chance to turn the page.

Officials celebrated the new BiblioTech facilities at the Warrior and Family Support Center at Fort Sam Houston Monday.

The support center aims to create a relaxing and encouraging environment to military officials as they return from duty and transition back to civilian life.

BiblioTech's bookless library currently provides access to 24,000 online books powered by the 3M cloud library. The library allows both wounded warriors and their families to access the library for diversion or education.

BiblioTech also provides language learning software, audio books, genealogy guides, and prep courses for testing and college entrance exams. Public feedback has shaped the library as it continues to grow and includes many films, music and graphic novels available on site.

"They've got a beautiful little computer center here, and we can bring a full library to a very small space. We are able to bring resources and diversion, not just for soldiers but their families as well," Laura Cole said, the BiblioTech project coordinator.

Wounded warriors and their families can use the center's desktop computers, the 3M Cloud Library Discovery Terminal, or their own personal devices to access the online catalogue at any time.

"We're just really happy to be providing this to the soldiers, and provide something back for them. They're an asset to our community and that's really the bottom line," Cole said.

The center has already begun sending out postcards to Bexar County military officials serving throughout the world to inform them of the resources available to them.

"We wanted to make sure that we also reach out to those service members who are here receiving treatment at BAMC so they know they are eligible to be patrons of BiblioTech," Judge Nelson Wolff said.

BiblioTech staff will be onsite twice a week to help wounded warriors and their families register for library cards and access the various collections.
