FLAG DAY A banner day at Daniel Webster Students celebrate in true red, white and blue style

Marshfield Mariner - 6/21/2017

Daniel Webster third-graders donned red, white and blue and sang in honor of Old Glory in celebration of Flag Day, June 14.

While the elementary school generally holds a Memorial Day celebration rather than a Flag Day event, Principal Sara Prouty said they wanted to try something different this year.

"It's so important for the traditions of our country to be passed down, and for the students to have awareness of what has kept our country free," she said. "They'll have that spirit and appreciation for our country."

The third-graders sang songs like "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Proud to be an American," and talked about the symbolism of the flag and what it stands for.

Local veterans were invited to the event, and said they enjoyed seeing young children get involved and show patriotism.

"There was a time when the importance of the flag has gone unnoticed. The ball was dropped," said Kevin Jewers, a veteran whose granddaughter took part in the performance. "Now these kids can carry it on."

Korean War veteran Larry Whalen said he really enjoyed the Flag Day celebration.

"It's so nice to see a tribute like this to the flag," he said. "Myself, and the other veterans really appreciate it."

Justin Kabilian, who is an active duty Marine Corps captain, came to the event because he grew up in the Marshfield schools and his mother is a teacher at Daniel Webster.

"It's extremely important to have kids at this age appreciate the American flag, what it stands for and represents," he said. "At a time like now, when people seem to forget, it's nice to see that it's still taught here."
