Gov. Scott Walker salutes La Crosse vet-owned businesses, unveils logo

La Crosse Tribune - 6/28/2017

June 28--Gov. Scott Walker saluted two La Crosse businesses -- Ledegar Roofing Inc. and Jaco Systems Technical Services -- during a whistle-stop state tour Tuesday to recognize veteran business owners and unveil the state's Wisconsin Veteran-Owned Business logo.

In prepared remarks for a press conference at Ledegar, Walker said, "It's true, the brave men and women who chose to serve in the United States armed forces deserve our full support and assistance when they return home.

"However, supporting veteran-owned businesses is not only a way to show our thanks to Wisconsin veterans -- it's also good for the entire state," Walker said.

Dan Koonce, who has owned Ledegar Roofing since 1996, is a U.S. Navy veteran who served from 1975 to 1984. Koonce was not able to attend the governor's visit, so his son, Alex, who is vice president of the company, stood in for him.

More than 390,000 veterans live in Wisconsin, about half of whom are working age, and about 11 percent of all businesses in the state, or 65,000, are veteran-owned, according to state figures. Wisconsin's veteran-owned businesses account for about $20 billion in annual sales.

Daniel Zimmerman, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, who accompanied Walker on the stops at La Crosse and three other cities, said, "A veteran's military experience provides him or her with the skills that make a savvy business owner -- leadership, the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, planning skills, organizational skills and adaptability.

"We are committed to supporting these veteran entrepreneurs who are creating jobs and improving the employment situation in our state," Zimmerman said.

Walker also declared Tuesday as Veteran-Owned Business Day throughout the Badger State, with the designation of #WIVetBiz Day.

Walker and Zimmerman also encouraged veterans who own businesses to obtain certification so they can be part of a statewide Veteran-Owned Business Directory that the WDVA will administer.

To become certified, veterans who own businesses should visit the WDVA website and click on the Wisconsin Veteran-Owned Business logo.
