BRIEF: Chamber collecting donations for homeless and at-risk veterans

Aberdeen American News - 1/9/2018

Jan. 09--Christmas might be behind us, but the season of giving never ends.

The American Legion Auxiliary is collecting Buddy Baskets and Buddy Bags for homeless and at-risk veterans and military families, according to a news release.

Residents are asked to put together home-warming welcome baskets or thank-a-hero bags, or to make a monetary donation.

Veteran's Relief Drive project founder Autumn Simunek said auxiliary and American Legion family members distribute the bags.

"We also distribute through South Dakota's veterans outreach programs, including homeless shelters, Veterans Service offices, family assistance centers (and the) Veterans Administration's homeless, rehabilitation and stand-down programs," she said in an email.

Donations can be dropped off at the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce, 516 S. Main St.

Baskets or bags for the drive should be donated by Jan. 31. However, Simunek said, substitute relief items and monetary contributions are accepted year-round.
