BRIEF: Loyalty Day marks first Veterans Walk of Flags

May 02--The Veterans Walk of Flags was put up for the first time in 2018 yesterday, May 1, for Loyalty Day. Loyalty Day is a day for people to reaffirm their loyalty to the United States and to recognize the heritage of American freedom. The day was designated by Congress on July 18, 1958, to foster loyalty and love of country.

2018 Veterans Walk of Flags Schedule:

--Saturday, May 19: Armed Forces Day

--Monday, May 28: Memorial Day

--Thursday, June 14: Flag Day

--Wednesday, July 4: Independence Day

--Tuesday, Aug. 7: Purple Hearts Day

--Monday, Sept. 3: Labor Day

--Friday, Sept. 21: POW/MIA Day

--Monday, Oct. 8: Columbus Day

--Sunday, Nov. 11: Veterans Day

Flags are displayed in 10 areas around town, including Veterans Park, NP Park, the court house, Junius Avenue, Union Avenue, Wright Park, Neese Park, City Hall Park, Friberg/Summit Avenue and the Minnesota Veterans Home.

Volunteers are always needed to unload and display the nearly 2,000 flags for each day. To volunteer for the Veterans Walk of Flags, call the group's president Curt Bergerson at 218-731-1256.
